Signal brings together my interest in functional domestic forms and the larger exterior built environment. The form of the table top, created with a photogrammetric scan of an existing manhole cover, at first appears as a found object. Subtle proportional cues in the top and the base suggest that something else is afoot. When the viewer peers underneath it is revealed to be a butcher block maple top with an industrial “flame sprayed” coating of high carbon steel. I intended for the base to point towards mid-century modernism and the design of a precious stone setting. Where the precious object appears as a mundane relic poised to crush the fragile modernist base.
